Chloe Smith offers condolences and reiterates call for safer cycling in Norwich after tragic accident

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, today repeated her call for safer cycling and respectful road use in Norwich following a second tragic death yesterday of a cyclist in a road traffic accident in her constituency.

Speaking after the accident which occurred on the North Walsham Road, following an other fatal accident last month, Chloe expressed her condolences and called for a ‘chain of respect’ to be observed on local roads.

Chloe has welcomed the new Norwich Area Cycle Network and has raised concerns about pavement cycling with the City Council and the police. She will now be calling on both the City and County councils to meet with her to address road safety. She will continue to raise specific hotspots from constituents, and now continues to raise awareness of safer cycling.  She urged drivers to respect cyclists, and cyclists to respect other road users and pedestrians.

Chloe is a regular cyclist and along with thousands of others recently completed the ‘Norwich 50’ ride for charity.

Chloe comments:

“Although we do not yet know the full facts about the tragic accident in Norwich late last night, everyone’s thoughts are with the cyclist’s family and friends.

“Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians must all play their part in respecting other users on the City’s roads. I am urging cyclists to take extra care over their safety on the road. Please make sure you have the necessary safety equipment and seek out basic training if you are unsure of cycling on the roads.

“If we can encourage all road users to observe the ‘chain of respect’ I hope we will see fewer tragic accidents like we saw in the City this week.  Norwich ought to be a safe, enjoyable place to cycle.”
